Easy Pirate Party Ideas
Pirate parties are a great birthday party theme for boys. It is easy to get supplies and most little boys have a pirate outfit - or can easily mock one up quickly - making it quite a hassle free option for parents.
Pirate Party Decorations
The first thing you will need to consider is the decorations. If you have a tight budget, an effective way to decorate your home for a pirate party is to use black, red and white balloons. Helium canisters can be bought for as little as £15, so you may want to have the balloons floating on the ceiling with curling ribbon hanging from them. This looks effective and is especially good for small rooms where space for decorations is limited. Put a Jolly Roger on the wall (a black flag with a skull and cross bones).
If you want to be a bit more adventurous, set up a pirate's den in the garden. How you do this will depend on the materials you have available to you, but one suggestion is to hang a large black cloth over a big table. Inside the den put sand on the ground, (a bag of play sand can be bought for about £2) and add finishing touches such as a sprinkling of gold chocolate coins, a pirate hat or a fake skull (available from many party supply places or virtually any shop near Halloween).
It is important to "dress" the table up to fit your theme. There are many variations on pirate paper plates, cups and napkins for sale. The birthday cake - if it fit's the theme - will likely make a great centre piece and you can also scatter chocolate coins on the table.
Pirate Party Invitations
You can buy suitable invitations for a pirate theme, but it is fun to make your own. Soak sheets of paper in tea and leave them to dry. This is a very effective way of making paper that looks authentically aged. Use a programme such as Word to compose your invitation and add some pirate clip art. Then print the invitations on the tea stained paper. To finish, roll each invitation into a scroll and tie with a black or red ribbon.
Pirate Party Costumes
To make a simple pirate costume you will need a striped T-shirt or a T-shirt with a skull and cross bones on and an old pair of jeans you don't mind cutting up. Use sharp scissors to create a jagged effect on the edge of the sleeves and the bottom of the T-shirt. Then roughly cut off the jeans at the knees. Making a belt can be a great way to enhance the look. Use a long scarf, a stripey tie or a strip of fabric threaded through the belt loops on the jeans. An eye patch is easy to make from black card or foam and some elastic, and a moustache or beard done with face paint can really finish off your pirate fancy dress.
Pirate Party Food
You can buy pirate cakes, but if you want to make your own look at books such as "Easy Party Cakes" by Debbie Brown or search in the internet for inspiration. Treasure chests, ships, skull and crossbones and jolly pirates are all popular designs. Collect and wash out some empty drinks bottles, then cover the label with your own skull and crossbones design (use clip art and print the labels if you are not confident about your drawing skills!).
Enjoy the party!
