Wedding Shower Party Ideas

Belly dancing! That's right I said belly dancing.

There is no better way to get the party going then this! Oriental dance as it is also called celebrates women of all shapes, sizes and ages and perfect for a wedding shower. Throw a coin belt and a veil on anyone and the fun begins instantaneously. Including the men!

How do I know this? I am a belly dance performance artist! Having worked many parties including showers, I know the reaction of the party goers, a belly dancing party gets the festivities in high gear every time!

Also being a pastry chef I know what is popular for cake styles and flavors. Here are some suggestions for the cake and for the bridal shower food.

Chocolate or carrot cake is always a refreshing change form the usual. Cupcakes are trendy now and are easy to make if you are doing it yourself. You could have a variety of flavors with cupcakes too. Decorate the cupcakes with gold coin chocolate candies for the Middle Eastern theme.

Baklava can be used in place of the cake or in addition. Turkish coffee would be a nice touch to the dessert table.

Appetizers can include Hummus, Tabouleh, pita bread for dipping along with veggies.

A main course could be shish kabob on the grill for an outdoor party. Or better yet find a Turkish, Lebanese or Greek restaurant to do the catering for you. They may even know a great belly dancer.

Assuming you are either the maid of honor, mom or sis, you obviously will know if this is something that your bride to be will enjoy. That is # 1. If not there are lots of other bridal shower party ideas that may work better for your guest of honor.

#2-Find a belly dancer, not just any dancer, you will want an instructor who is also a skilled performer. So do ask around and search online, look at videos and call your local dance studios for recommendations.

Ask if the dancer provides coin scarves, veils, headpieces etc. I provide all of these, but not everyone does. A special headpiece is reserved for the bride to be. Every one gets hip scarves and veils. Finger cymbals are also a nice touch.

The performance itself should be short and sweet and consist of an entrance (usually with finger cymbals), a veil dance, a drum solo and a finale. 10- 15 minutes at most. It should not be overly sexual, just fun and upbeat and tasteful.

Discuss the music and how it will be played. Make sure that there is a cd player available with a decent sound system. It's hard to feel the music if the music is playing too softly or with a really poor speaker system.

Talk about where the dancer will be performing. It can be dangerous dancing on grass or gravel, especially since we often dance barefoot. Will the dancer be a surprise? For birthday parties it usually is a surprise. But not necessarily for a bridal shower If not then you can ask all of the women to come dressed in full skirts, bellydancing is always better in a skirt when doing the hip movements. Find decorations to fit the theme like brass vases, candles, beads, coins, silks and pillows in rich colors.

Have someone video tape the festivities and take lots of pictures, you will want to remember this party for a long time.

Ask the dancer if she has coin scarves for sale at a reasonable price.

The dancer may also be willing to do a giveaway for a class or two. You could have a drawing at the end and give a gift certificate to the winner.
